Do Nurses have success in Sales jobs?

This is a popular topic when it comes to Medical Sales jobs and Nurses.

Do Nurses make good sales people?

Or, should Nurses just stick to Nursing jobs?

Medical Sales Managers have a very mixed view on this.

Some prefer Nurses for their Medical Sales jobs for the following reasons -

Nurses have very strong communication skills, in particular an ability to empathise with their patients and in sales, empathy with the customer is a key skill required

Nurses have the language for a Medical field

Nurses are qualified in the Medical Profession

Nurses know where to find the right people in a Hospital

Nurses have an automactic respect from their colleagues they may be selling to

Nurses may already have an established rapport with some of the Key Decision Makers

Nurses are seen as someone to trust

On the other side of the coin, some Medical Sales Managers do not prefer Nurses for the following reasons -

They are Clinical and not Commercial

No Business qualification generally

They do not understand Sales

They can struggle with coming from a sympathetic environment to one that is cold, figure orientated and target driven

Wearing a suit rather then a uniform is foreign

Generally, they have poor IT skills

Can be too empathetic and sympathetic, not Sales focussed

All in all, do Nurses have success in Sales jobs?

The answer is mixed - yes, some make excellent Medical Sales Reps, but no, others do not!

The Right Nursing CV

The Right Curriculum Vitae (CV) and the wrong CV is paramount when it comes to applying for jobs or registering with medical recruitment agencies. The right CV will get you noticed on first applying as the right CV will always be clear, concise and to the point. It will detail exactly what the recruiter or employer is looking for.

Employers and Recruiters alike will have an initial checklist for each and every job they are recruiting for. When it comes to having the right CV, you should adopt this process when doing your own CV.

When it comes to doing your Nursing CV, have something similar to the following CV checklist:

Personal Details, including postal address, phone number and email address

Personal Profile - ensure it is a brief synopsis of your career and personal characteristics

Qualifications Checklist - All of your qualifications should be included here, including those you are currently undergoing. It is under this title that you give your Nursing qualification and whether you are at RGN, RCN, RPN registered status. This will indicate the type of base training you will have received. All add on certificates, diplomas and masters should also be under this title.

Course Updates Checklist - Whether it is Phlebotomy, Infection Control or Manual Handling it is a good idea to have these mentioned on your CV. If the list gets too long you can incorporate the lesser updates into an Additional Skills/ Competencies section.

Experience Checklist - This should always have the company you have worked for, the title you have been employed to do (e.g. Staff Nurse, Senior Staff Nurse), the type of ward or patients you are dealing with (e.g. orthopaedic ward, elderly ward, theatre/ surgical, children’s ward) and your daily duties and responsibilities. It would also be helpful for you to mention on your CV some of the specialised equipment you are proficient in using, e.g. Woundcare Therapies or PEG/ Enteral Feeding systems. It is always a better idea to reference these starting from most recent down.

I always find that doing drafts of your CV is the best way to start on the road to the right CV. There is absolutely no point in sending your CV to an employer or a medical recruitment agency if you are not happy with it. If the medical recruiter is trained correctly, they will end up asking you to change your CV with the above regardless!

Medical Recruitment Agencies are there to help when it comes to all aspects of the recruitment process and will give you advice on everything from your CV, to career direction and all the way to starting you in the right job for you. They will not do your CV for you, but they can shed a lot of light on what is important and what is not. The information must come from you and what you have done to date with your nursing career.

When aiming at a new job, think about your CV and if it is the right CV for you. Then get in touch with a trusted medical or nursing specific recruitment agency and ask their advice. Have a think about the direction you would like to progress your career to next and have that all important conversation to build a relationship with a recruiter. They should always have your best interests at heart.

Getting the right nursing CV seems like a very daunting task, but with the right CV and career advice it gets easier!

There may be a moratorium in the HSE, but there are definitely other options outside a public hospital ward for qualified nurses – and I am not just talking about Sales!

Medical Suppliers, specifically manufacturers have Sales Managers yes, but what a lot of Nurses do not realise is that these manufacturers like to have specialist nurses to advise, train and educate: patients, carers, staff nurses, public health nurses, practise nurses on their systems – depending on the product.

Examples of Nurse Advisors:

Feeding pumps/ Enteral feeding –

Companies will require a Clinical Nurse Advisor to take on the job of going into the acute setting (hospital ward) to train staff and patient on their specific feeding pump/ tube. They will then meet the patient and their carer in the non-acute setting (home) and train both at home. They will also have strong dealings with the HCPs in the Community setting including Public Health Nurses, Community Dietitians, GPs. They will advise, train and educate all those involved in the process including the best practise with infection control.

Woundcare –

Manufacturers of a specific and tailored wound therapy system will more often than not have a Clinical Support Specialist to work alongside the Territory Manager/ Sales Manager to support the Clinical aspect of the therapy area itself. This job involves an expert (that expert being a Nurse specifically specialised in woundcare) advising patients and nurses on the therapy, training, holding education meetings alongside the Territory Manager. As with those in the feeding pumps field, these Clinical Support Specialist will see the patient in the acute setting and once again in the non acute setting providing support, training and education.

Dental –

Dental Sales & Dental Nurses will always be a consideration for Dental Sales positions as they act as a person who knows what they are talking about. Dental Nurses have hands on experience with both consumables and implants and have that insider knowledge on what a Dental practice needs. They know that the Dental receptionist is the first port of call and the job of the Dentist themselves.

Nutrition –

Paediatric Nurses/ Neonatal Nurses are of huge consideration to Nutrition companies, whether that is a Clinical Support person, an Infant Nutrition Sales person, a Patient Care Coordinator for infants/ toddlers. These children’s nurses have, again, the hands on expertise on the effects of nutrition in babies or special needs babies and can advise, educate, train or indeed merely support a mother or carer.

Diabetes –

Manufacturers/ suppliers of diabetes products - whether insulin pumps, injections or insulin pens to name but a few – are requesting Diabetes Nurses to work on both their Sales force and their support and training staff. These too provide a dual service to their customers, one being the product (represented in the form of medical sales) and the other being the support and essential back up in the form of a Clinical Specialist who will always be there to support, train and educate.

The possibilities and importance of Nurse Advisors in the Medical world are endless. The fact of the matter is that Nurses know how to speak to Nurses, and in turn if your Medical Sales Rep is known to be a Nurse then their opinion will be trusted that little bit more as they are deemed to know what they are talking about. With Homecare becoming a fastly growing industry in this country and Nurse Advisors working on behalf of the supplier providing training and education to staff, Nurse Advisors are fast becoming an essential part of the medical industry in Ireland.

But do watch out Nurses, these Nurse Advisor jobs are hot!

What is a High Dependency Unit Nurse?

A High Dependency Unit (HDU) provides continuous observation on patients in it’s care, including accurate recording of fluid intake and output, blood pressure (via arterial line in some cases). It also plays an important role among the remainder of patients who are being prepared for operation and others who simply require close observation, e.g. head injuries, closed chest trauma, severe pancreatitis.

Patients spend varying lengths of time in HDU, depending on the nature of their illness and the demands on the unit. Before a patient is discharged from Intensive Care, they should have a clinical assessment to assess their condition post operation.

The importance of High Dependency Care falls to:

Elderly patients - sufferers of a pre-existing medical condition and those who are less able to overcome adverse sequelae.

Paediatric- critically ill children or post op from an Intensive Care Unit. These are children who the doctor feels are in need of closer monitoring than that of a general medical ward.

The job of Nurses who work in High Dependency Units must have Clinical Nursing experience within the specific patient area, e.g. paediatric nursing or elderly care nursing, plus further training and experience in a High Dependency Unit and/ or Intensive Care Unit.

Those Nurses who have this HDU specialism are essential to the medical world, as the importance of High Dependency Care is an increasingly essential element in post surgical and critical care. They work in a small and intense environment but almost immediately become an essential part of the patients’ lives in the recovery process, including easing the minds of family - whether that is the parents of a child or the families of an elderly patient.

It is by saying this that I have no qualm in saying that High Dependency Care Nurses and the skills they possess are and always will be highly sought after as more and more private facilities are developing their High Dependency Care.

Nurses in Dementia Care We Salute You!

Dementia is a group of symptoms related to the on-going decline of the brain and it’s abilities which include:

Memory

Understanding

Judgement

Language

Thinking

Caring for the Dementia patient is a challenging, yet rewarding career that requires patience, stamina and understanding.

The Dementia sufferer is likely to react differently to the treatment strategies and Nurses need to be aware of the full range of available skills and attributes curtailed to working in this area of specific care.

One of the most common types of dementia is Alzheimer’s Disease and it can vary day to day, depending on the person. The list of symptoms goes on and on, and can range from repetitive questions to wandering, from personality changes to having difficulty with forming and flowing conversations, and to the most distressing of all symptoms with aggressive behaviour.

The predominant focus of care should be on maximising independant activity, enhancing and emphasising the “Quality of Life” factor in Dementia Sufferers.

Those Nurses who have specialised in Dementia and Alzheimer’s Care tend to have a very specific passion and empathy for people with Dementia and it is these Nurses who should be highly commended for their work. In a specific Dementia add on qualification, or even with hands on specific on-site training, they are taught the symptoms and early symptoms of Dementia and how to cater to their individual needs.

Whether it is to ease their anxiety of their environment, dealing with a violent outburst with patience and understanding, simply sitting down and listening to their stories of old or giving that patient and their families the comfort that they are simply being looked after is of paramount importance to these Nurses. Sometimes all that is missing is the ability of communication and a kind an empathetic ear to resolve to situation.

To Nurses who have that passion, care and that special place in their heart for sufferers of Dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease, we salute you.
