Who Cares for Our Elderly

May 6th, 2010

Who Cares?

Who Cares?

Who cares for our elderly? We are indebted to the Geriatric Nurses of our nation for their love and compassion towards the elderly of our country.

Whether you have a beloved Grandmother or a hard thinking Grandfather who needs care and constant compassion and empathy that simply goes beyond what you can give them, it is the hands of our Gerontology Nurses that their lives are placed in.

Who cares for the elderly? It is those Nurses who have the love and patience for what they do, those who are consumed with caring for our loved ones, and those who I dare say get caught up in the stories of old!

We also understand that you may be living away from home or travelling to get to work. In which case we may have an option for you to continue caring for the elderly with a number of opportunities in Nursing Homes around the country.

The current open Geriatric Nursing Jobs are open:

  • Staff Nurse - Tipperary - 2 years experience in caring for the elderly
  • Senior Staff Nurse - Galway - 3 years experience in Geriatrics and Disabilities
  • Staff Nurse - Wicklow - 2 years experience in caring for the elderly.

We are here to help with Nursing jobs and to help you continue your fantastic work with our elderly.

If you are looking to either move closer to home or progress your career within Gerontology, then please do give us a call.

Our hats are off to the fine Nurses in Geriatrics!

Nurses make excellent Sales people

January 6th, 2010

Nurses for Sales

Nurses for Sales

Nurses make excellent sales people is a comment often heard from Sales Managers in the Medical and Pharmaceutical sector.

Nurses have a natural ability to listen and empathise with patients and others in their line of work.

Good Sales people have to be able to listen more than they speak and Nurses tend to fall in to this bracket.

Nurses are generally patient and courteous - other essential key elements in sales.

So if you are a Nurse who is feeling let down by the HSE and Ireland in general and want to consider something different that you can use you specialist communication skills in - Medical Sales may be it.

The Interviewers’ biggest frustration

December 23rd, 2009

LISTEN AT INTERVIEWS

LISTEN AT INTERVIEWS

We regularly hear the same complaint from interviewers in relation to their biggest frustration when interviewing.

65% of the time the interviewee does not answer the question that was asked.

They are asking a specific question and know what they are looking for and the interviewee - (due to being nervous undoubetedly) goes around in circles and deviates from the main point and gives a long winded answer that does not address the question asked.

Interviewers fiind this particularly annoying and frustrating.

There is a well known expression  -

You have 2 ears and 1 mouth - use accordingly

This means listen twice as much as you talk particularly at interviews so you may hear and understand the question being asked before you answer it.

Is Nursing Abroad an option?

November 26th, 2009

NURSING ABROAD

NURSING ABROAD

Is Nursing abroad an option for you right now?

While there is so much uncertainty with the HSE, contracts not being renewed, lack of jobs, lack of promotional jobs and a lack of Nursing Agency work, this has to be a serious possibility for our Nurses today.

Redundancies are becoming a daily occurrence in a field most of us would have assumed was relatively safe as sick people will carry on being sick even in a Recession and possibly more so in a recession and Nurses are vital to them.

But alas, the redundancies and cuts keep happening.

There are definite Nursing opportunities within the UK for New Grads and experienced Nurses.

There are also Specialist Nursing and Midwifery opportunities in Australia.

I have worked as a Nurse in both and can highly recommend both - the NHS definitely gives the HSE a run for its money and the Australian system is of a very high standard with huge respect and autonomy for it’s Nurses. The UK offers alot of variety in terms of further development for Nurses and opportunities are abundant.

If you are in a position as a Nurse in Ireland to consider going abroad it would be well worth the move as you will undoubtedly expand your horizons and get away from all the Irish negativity.

Where have all the Nurses gone?

October 14th, 2009

WHERE HAVE ALL THE NURSES GONE?

Good morning,

I am wondering where have all the Nurses gone?

In particular the Specialist ones - Occupational Health Nurses and Practice Nurses?

They are a Specialist Group, but there is little movement currently within the Nursing market in terms of jobs choices and offers of permanency, so when jobs come up seeking these Specialist Nurses, I am surprised they are so hard to find.

We have had 2 recent Occupational Health Nurse job seeking Senior OH Nurses.

We have also had 2 Practice Nurse jobs within Dublin, again seeking Senior Practice Nurses.

The feedback seems to be that nobody wants to change job in this time of uncertainty and will hold on to what they have with both hands in case it slips.

Understandable.

Nurses - watch your back!

May 20th, 2009

Watch your back!

Watch your back!

Good afternoon,

I have had many recent enquiries from Nurses wanting to make a change into something else that does not involve lifting and unsocial hours!

This is a common query and thankfully, there are solutions to a bad back and unsocial hours -

Alot of Nurses I know personally and those I come in to contact with on a daily basis as a Medical Recruitment Agency have bad backs due to years of strenuous lifting which has caused this desire to change career.

Medical Sales is one option, but it depends on the type of injury.

Sitting all day in a car and then a Doctors waiting room may hinder rather than help the back.

Research is also another popular one - but again, sitting at a desk all day long may not work.

Changing direction may involve going back to study depending on your circumstances, part time or at night and it will definitely prove worth it when you can work more social hours and save your back from any further injury.

Depending on what the back injury is, there are a few options which may be considered -

  1. Practice or Community Nursing
  2. Out Patients Nursing
  3. Private Clinic Consultants Suites
  4. Ward Secretary
  5. Medical or GP Sales
  6. Research
  7. Air Hostess
  8. Reducing hours, if able to afford it
  9. Medical Recruitment

I made the change from Nursing into Medical Recruitment 9 years ago due to a back injury - and never looked back!

There’s hope for us all!

Student Nurses disheartened?

April 27th, 2009

Nurses hang in there!

Nurses hang in there!

Good evening all fellow Nurses and Student Nurses,

I speak to Nurses in my profession on a daily basis and being one myself, it is hard not to be a little disheartened by this profession in today’s society.

We were moving up with the ‘Nurse Prescribing’ and now we are knocked back down by the HSE jobs cuts, pay decreases and Student Pay cuts.

It is a priviledge to be a Nurse and once you make that decision that is what you have chosen to be, so starts a rocky uphill climb.

But, all is not lost!

If you stick with the study and your course, it is the most worthwhile job still out there.

Where else can you make so much difference to a person’s day or life?

The Nurses biggest fan club remains the patients and that will always be the case as they are the ones who see and feel day in and day out what it is that we do.

I come across many different professions in my day and a Nurse will always make me smile and listen.

Nurses are real, in touch and professional people with hearts of gold.

Who else puts up with night shits, working weekends, bank holidays and grumpy patients?!

If you are studying Nursing, don’t lose heart, stick with it as it is definitely one of the most unselfish and worthwhile professions out there.
