Sticking to Nursing? Choose Wisely

Sticking to Nursing? Choose Wisely

Location location location! The importance of knowing where you are willing to work!

Talk to your Recruiter when applying for a job. It is imperative you know where the job is located in comparison to your home. Ask your self these questions:

  • Is it close to home?
  • Are you willing to commute?
  • How far are you willing to commute?
  • What is the traffic like around those working hours?
  • Have you mapped the journey?
  • Are you willing to relocate?
It is so important to map where you live in comparison to the location of the next ideal Nursing role. Nurses do hard enough work and long enough hours that an added 2 hours drive home could be detrimental!
If the job is the ideal career path for you then you may need to consider relocating - bearing in mind your home situation.  If you are not looking to relocate then maybe a commute to the next hospital or nursing home down the motorway is the right move for you.
The right move may be to a hospital or Nursing Home in your town.
Consider the location, consider relocating.
But it is all about location, location, location!

Get out of Nursing

Trapped in Nursing, let you CV Set you Free

Trapped in Nursing, let you CV Set you Free

Looking to get out of Nursing but your CV is not doing your any favours? Maybe your CV isn’t doing it’s job.

Try thinking in terms of the job you are going for rather than the job you are coming from. Tailor your CV towards the end goal. If your CV states all your Nursing duties and none of the run of the mill skills such as

  • paper work
  • people skills
  • report writing
  • hand-overs
  • documentation
  • attention to detail
  • communication skills
then this is where you need to start.
Read the job description and if you deal with the specifics in there then your CV needs to say it!

Nurses - watch your back!

May 20th, 2009

Watch your back!

Watch your back!

Good afternoon,

I have had many recent enquiries from Nurses wanting to make a change into something else that does not involve lifting and unsocial hours!

This is a common query and thankfully, there are solutions to a bad back and unsocial hours -

Alot of Nurses I know personally and those I come in to contact with on a daily basis as a Medical Recruitment Agency have bad backs due to years of strenuous lifting which has caused this desire to change career.

Medical Sales is one option, but it depends on the type of injury.

Sitting all day in a car and then a Doctors waiting room may hinder rather than help the back.

Research is also another popular one - but again, sitting at a desk all day long may not work.

Changing direction may involve going back to study depending on your circumstances, part time or at night and it will definitely prove worth it when you can work more social hours and save your back from any further injury.

Depending on what the back injury is, there are a few options which may be considered -

  1. Practice or Community Nursing
  2. Out Patients Nursing
  3. Private Clinic Consultants Suites
  4. Ward Secretary
  5. Medical or GP Sales
  6. Research
  7. Air Hostess
  8. Reducing hours, if able to afford it
  9. Medical Recruitment

I made the change from Nursing into Medical Recruitment 9 years ago due to a back injury - and never looked back!

There’s hope for us all!

ABA increase retention fee for 2009

December 10th, 2008

An Bord Altranais (ABA) have announced an increase in the annual retention fee in 2009.  The fees will rise from €77 to €85.

They cite the increase in Fitness to Practice enquiries as the main reason for the increase.  The costs associated with Fitness to Practice enquiries rose substantially from €0.6m to over €1m between 2005 and 2007. This is a rise of over 70% and similar increases in costs are expected for 2008 and 2009.

This is bad news for nurses who have to battle for every meager salary increase and some of whom have not even had their working hours brought in line.

Leave us your comments on how you feel ABA give you value for your hard earned money.
